Seeking 1610 is an homage to my grandmother’s address in the Caravelle Commons apartments in Indianapolis, Indiana.
My grandmother helped raise me by balancing social security benefits and food stamps.
But I never felt poor until we went grocery shopping. Grocery shopping was an ordeal that involved making a list, adding up items while waiting in line, and discarding things that may put you over the limit. When you’re poor, a trip to the grocery store is exhausting.
After I graduated, I started working directly with people experiencing poverty. Though we had similar experiences, like being worried when we entered the checkout line at the grocery store, I had something they didn’t. I had stability.
I inherited stability from my grandmother. She remained in the same community for nearly 40 years. Seeking 1610 is an homage to my grandmother’s address and the lessons she taught me there. Seeking 1610 is my way of helping others achieve the stability that transformed my family.
